House plants and flowers: green cart
Green cart — Compost
House plants, cut flowers, garden plants and common weeds go in the green cart. Remove pots, plastic sleeves and other non-plant parts first.
How to prepare it
- Strip bouquets of plastic bags, water vials, elastics, pins, baskets and tags before composting the flowers.
- Dead plants and leftover potting soil go in the green cart; rinse plastic plant pots and trays and recycle them in the blue cart.
- Common weeds such as dandelions and clover are fine, even after they have gone to seed.
- Bag noxious or invasive weeds, tie them closed and put them inside the black cart so seeds do not spread.
Good to know
Noxious and invasive weeds, such as Canada thistle, leafy spurge and scentless chamomile, are the key exception. Bags of them must fit inside the black cart; bags left beside it are not collected, even if tagged. Bigger loads can go to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply and you must tell the scale house what you are bringing.
