Grass clippings: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put grass clippings in the green cart, or leave them on the lawn after mowing to break down naturally.
How to prepare it
- Fill the green cart first, then use paper yard waste bags with rolled tops for the rest; never plastic bags.
- Keep each bag under 20 kg and set it 0.5 m (2 ft) from the cart on collection day.
- To leave clippings on the lawn, take the bag off your mower, mow when the grass is dry and cut no more than a third of the blade.
- Until October 31, 2026, City Eco Centres take extra household grass clippings for free; leave sod out, as it is charged the garbage rate.
Good to know
Watch the cart's 60 kg weight limit; if you can roll it easily, it should be fine. During busy yard season the City may cap how many extra bags it takes, so keep any left behind on your property for the next week's pickup. Leaving clippings on the lawn also saves room in your cart.
