Christmas tree: green cart

Green cart — Compost

Strip a real Christmas tree of all decorations and its stand, then cut it into pieces that fit your green cart with the lid closed.

How to prepare it

  1. Cut the tree into lengths of 1.25 m (4 ft) or less, with a trunk under 15 cm (6 in) across.
  2. Take off every light, ornament and strand of tinsel; trees that are not prepared properly are not collected.
  3. If the cart fills up, set extra branches in rolled-closed paper yard waste bags 0.5 m from the cart.
  4. Real wreaths and garlands can be composted once ribbons, wires and nails are off.
  5. Keep real trees out of the black cart; black carts with a tree inside are not collected.

Good to know

The City runs temporary tree drop-off sites over the holidays, but dates and locations for the coming season have not been announced yet; check the City's Christmas tree composting page before you go. Never bag or wrap a tree you drop off. Artificial trees are not compostable: donate usable ones, or break broken ones down for the black cart.
